I see patients with anxiety just about every single shift, and the winter holiday season definitely ramps things up a lot. The holidays are just plain stressful. However, I suspect that a lot of the medical problems I see are indirectly caused from holiday stress as well. We know stress can cause disease, and chronic illness, so it’s no surprise. Just like clockwork, the volume of patients in the ER increases every winter in early December and lasts through well into February. There’s lots of pneumonia, heart problems, just about everything.
So this year, I’m cancelling Christmas, Hanukah, and every other winter holiday there is. I know this won’t be popular, but I feel it is medically necessary, and I owe it to the health of the community. I apologize if you already bought a tree, and decorated the house. Take the presents back, and go for a walk. And don’t forget to take a nice, slow, deep breath and relax. Christmas is hereby cancelled.

screams “Serenity Now!”
Oh yeah. Happy Festivus.
I’ll let you tell my children that Christmas is canceled – it’ll be less stressful for me. My stress has more to do with words like “hey let’s have doctor z. biopsy that little lesion and make sure it’s not skin cancer”. Of course no appointment until January, probably no test results until end of January beginning of February. Christmas is the least of my worries.
WOOHOOOO!!!!!!11 I hate Christmas.
Gotta go. Time to go kill some puppies.
Hah, ha “Serenity Now”! , i remember it well. Gather ’round the Festivus Pole and air your grievnces…..
And, as long as we’re at it “…and here i am in India, with all my idiot friends”. (my fav episode).
