Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

by Your ER Doc on December 20, 2008

I’ve had many patients come in with carbon monoxide concerns, but this story was really depressing.

Carbon monoxide is an odorless byproduct of combustion, and can be lethal. It firmly binds to hemoglobin molecules in your blood stream and makes it impossible for oxygen to bind. As a result, oxygen cannot get delivered to the vital organs. The process can be gradual, and clearly deadly.

Just this past month a family of 4 died and a Toronto family of 6 were rescued on time. Carbon monoxide detectors are mandatory in all homes one on each level in this Province and it should be so everywhere. If you have a gas furnace or fireplace not having one puts your life and your loved ones at risk…ciao
